Norfolk Seals:
Back again to Blakeney Point for the Seals, this time I added another location to the day, Winterton-on-Sea on the East coast of Norfolk. It’s quite a walk from the car park, about 45mins to 1hour along the sandy beach, but well worth the effort, as you can sit and leisurely watch the seals close-by for as long as you wish. Keep a fair and reasonable distance and these seals, both grey and common, and they tend stay put and ignore you.
Dunwich Red Deer:
The Red Deer that live over the forests and heaths of Dunwich are getting ready for the all important rutting season, from September onwards the stags are looking their best with a full set of antlers, this is when you realise how much bigger these beasts are compared to the females. At this time of year they are more interested in each other. The young bucks watch the elders strut their stuff and show off their magnificence and duly copy them, preparing for when it is their turn to rut for leadership and the right to mate. By being preoccupied with other activities it’s a good time to get reasonably close to them.
Autumn Colours:
Local Suffolk Forests and their colour scheme, bright gold, yellow, orange and red contrasting with the remaining green that surrounds before they fall to the ground to bare the deciduous trees completely as winter approaches.
Cumbria August 2009
I have just returned from two weeks in Cumbria with my family, despite the 10-day weather forecast showing rain and more rain prior to our visit, to our surprise this was not the case and we had a wonderful time. The skies as usual in the Lake District were often moody which made for good photography. Click on the galleries where you will see some of my pictures.
June 2009 Trip - Skomer Island Pembrokeshire
The Island of Skomer just off the south west coast of Pembrokeshire, is host to many sea birds including these puffins. Take a look at the gallery pages for more interesting pictures from the day - (now in with wildlife colour).
Originally I was booked to go to Skokholm, a neighbouring island to Skomer, however the sea wasn't allowing us to disembark so we went to Skomer Island instead. It turned out to be a great day watching the Razorbills and Guillemots as well as the puffin colony there. Large Herring Gulls and Black backed gulls would lurk in wait, then consistantly fly-by overhead as the puffins return from the sea with a bill full of sand eels, they swoop down to take the Puffin's catch, not always succesfully though you'll be glad to hear. The Puffin's have great personalities, it's seemed on occasions that they gloated at the gulls by perching on the edge of the cliffs, bill full of sand eels, as the gulls fly by empty 'handed' (well, empty bills). They also seem to react to us visitor's, curious definatley, but almost showing off by seemingly posing for the people and the cameras?? On the day that we went at the tail end of June, the Countryfile crew also arrived to film for an episode of the program on the Nature Reserves with Julia Bradbury. A very interesting day with the highlight being the amazing Puffin's.
